Confident woman with notebook and plan

A friend paid $400 for a sleep consultant. Four hundred dollars. For two phone calls and a PDF.

You know what the PDF said? Put the baby down awake. Set a consistent bedtime. Don’t feed to sleep. Follow a routine. Wait before responding to every sound.

She could have gotten that from any sleep book, any blog post, or literally me, for free, at any point during the previous three months when she’d been complaining about night wakes.

“But I needed someone to tell me it was okay,” she said.

And you know what? Fair. I get it. But that $400 wasn’t for information. It was for permission.

The Information Is Free. Everywhere.

There is no secret technique that only certified sleep consultants know. The principles of infant sleep are well-established, publicly available, and remarkably consistent across every reputable source: consistent schedule, independent sleep onset, appropriate sleep environment, predictable routine.

The $300-$500 you pay a consultant isn’t buying you secret knowledge. It’s buying you someone to hold your hand while you do the hard part. Which is fine if you need it. But let’s be honest about what we’re paying for.

What You Actually Need

A clear method. One. Written down. That you can follow step-by-step without interpretation or decision-making at 2 a.m.

A partner or support person. Someone who’s read the plan, agrees with it, and will hold you accountable when you want to cave.

A spine. The willingness to be uncomfortable for a few nights, to hear some crying, to sit with guilt, and to keep going anyway because you know the outcome is worth it.

That’s it. That’s the whole list. Nobody needs to charge you hundreds of dollars for it.

When a Consultant IS Worth It

If your baby has medical complexities (reflux, feeding issues, weight gain concerns), a professional can help you navigate sleep training around those challenges. That’s specialized knowledge worth paying for.

If you’re genuinely at a breaking point and cannot function without someone walking you through it step by step in real time? Then the investment is in your mental health, not in information. And that’s valid.

But if you’re a healthy baby with a healthy parent who just hasn’t committed to a plan yet? Save your money. Buy a book. (I happen to know one coming out soon.) Follow it for a week. You’ll have the same result.

The Real Barrier

Nobody wants to hear this, but: the reason most parents “can’t” sleep train isn’t lack of information or support. It’s lack of commitment. They start. They get uncomfortable. They stop. They try something else. They get uncomfortable again. Cycle repeats.

A consultant can’t give you commitment. Neither can a book. That part has to come from you.

Mom Awakened gives you the method. Clear. Complete. No fluff. No “if this doesn’t work, try this alternative.” One plan. Your job is to follow it. Coming soon.
