Top SEL Books That Help Kids Navigate Emotions (Plus My Favorites!)

Top 5 SEL Books Every Parent Needs.

As the holiday season approaches, it’s the perfect time to start thinking about meaningful gifts that will nurture your child’s emotional development. Books that focus on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) are a great way to enrich your home library while teaching your children important life skills. Not only are these books filled with heartwarming stories, but they also help kids navigate their feelings in a fun and engaging way, all while fostering empathy, resilience, and mindfulness. By adding these SEL books to your collection, you’re giving the gift of emotional intelligence—a valuable tool that will serve your child for years to come. And with Christmas just around the corner, there’s no better time to start building a library that will grow with your child and support them as they develop into compassionate and emotionally aware individuals.

As a mom of two rambunctious boys (#boymom) and a children’s book author, my life is a swirling storm of laughter, noise, and emotional meltdowns. If you’re anything like me, you’ve Googled “how to teach emotional intelligence to kids” during a moment of panic after a particularly wild tantrum. Enter Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) books—my saving grace and possibly the thing keeping my sanity somewhat intact.

This year, I’ve leaned heavily on some incredible SEL books that teach kids how to process big emotions in gentle, relatable ways. “The Rabbit Listened” by Cori Doerrfeld tops the list, providing a beautiful story about empathy and the power of simply being present for someone. It’s one of those books you read and think, “This is exactly what I needed as a child.”

Another favorite is “Breathe Like a Bear” by Kira Willey, which includes mindfulness exercises so easy and engaging that even my toddler sits still for a minute. It’s a magical moment when your child transforms from a tornado into a calm, breathing little person.

When it comes to explaining emotions, “The Color Monster” by Anna Llenas is pure genius. The vibrant illustrations and clever color-coded emotions give kids a visual language to express how they feel.

For fostering empathy and kindness, “I Am Human” by Susan Verde is a heartfelt reminder of the beauty of compassion. It’s a quick, impactful read for teaching kids the importance of seeing the humanity in others.

Finally, “Grumpy Monkey” by Suzanne Lang has been a lifesaver on days when “grumpy” doesn’t even begin to describe the mood in my house. This book makes it clear that it’s okay to feel all kinds of emotions, even the tough ones, and that sometimes, you just need to sit with your feelings. (This is hands-down my favorite book cover of all time!) 🙂

These books have inspired my own contributions to the SEL landscape, including “Anger Is My Monster” and “I Can Overcome My Sadness”. In Anger Is My Monster, I explore the all-too-familiar challenge of helping kids navigate their frustration without erupting like little volcanoes. My goal was to create a relatable story for kids (and parents) who need practical tools to tame their inner beast. Find it on Amazon or learn more on my website at www.claraharperbooks.com.

In I Can Overcome My Sadness, I tackle grief and loss, offering kids a comforting story that helps them understand and process sadness in a way that feels safe and hopeful. It’s the book I wish I’d had during tough times as a child. Grab it on Amazon or visit its page on my website here.

If you’re a mom, teacher, or just someone who wants to help kids navigate the emotional ups and downs of life, I can’t recommend these SEL books enough. And, yes, I’d be thrilled if you added mine to your bookshelf too. SEL is not just about raising happier, healthier kids—it’s about creating a kinder, more empathetic world.

This holiday season, give your child the gift of stories that inspire self-awareness and emotional growth—perfect for cozy reading nights and discussions around the tree.
