There was a time when “mom burnout” was just something you whispered about to your best friend at preschool pickup. Now? It’s trending on TikTok, plastered across Instagram memes, and even showing up in parenting headlines.
And honestly? It’s about time. Because moms have been running on fumes for decades. In 2025, the internet finally has a name for it — and moms everywhere are saying, “Oh good, so it’s not just me.”
What Exactly Is Mom Burnout?
It’s that bone-deep exhaustion that isn’t fixed by a nap or a coffee run. It’s the mental load of keeping everyone alive, fed, clean, and clothed while trying to remember when your last shower was. It’s snapping at your kids for spilling Cheerios, not because of the Cheerios, but because you haven’t had a moment to yourself in five days.
Mom burnout is a mix of physical fatigue, emotional overload, and the crushing pressure of being “everything” for everyone.
Why Burnout Is Trending in 2025
- Social media moms are finally saying the quiet part out loud. No more filtered “perfect mom” feeds. Real moms are filming meltdowns, messy kitchens, and Target parking lot breakdowns.
- Parenting hasn’t gotten easier. If anything, it’s gotten harder. Economic stress, global chaos, and “do more with less” culture have left moms running on empty.
- The rise of “gentle parenting” means more emotional work. Being calm and patient all the time sounds nice until you’re running on no sleep and your kid just dumped applesauce on the dog.
How to Survive Without Losing Yourself
1. Lower the Bar (Seriously)
PTA Susan with her Pinterest-worthy birthday parties? Homemade gluten-free dinosaur nuggets? Forget it. Your kids need love and snacks — not a TikTok-worthy mom who collapses from exhaustion.
2. Say “No” Without Explaining
No, you can’t volunteer for every PTA event. No, you can’t host the neighborhood BBQ this week. “No” is a complete sentence, and burnout prevention often starts there.
3. Reclaim Ten Minutes
Hide in the bathroom with your phone. You may have seen my embarrassing Youtube videos lately where I hide in the guest toilet I affectionately call my “Lady Lair”. It is officially the only room in my apartment with a door that locks and I keep a bottle of wine, a pumpkin spice candle, whatever books I can’t stop binge reading, and snacks I don’t have to share. If you don’s have a Lady Lair, do something else! Walk around the block alone. Blast a podcast while you do dishes. Ten stolen minutes of “you” time can keep you from falling off the burnout cliff.
4. Outsource the Guilt
You’re going to feel guilty no matter what — so at least pick the things worth feeling guilty about. Screen time for the kids while you get a breather? That’s survival, not failure.
5. Laugh About It
Parenting without humor is just unpaid labor. The chaos is easier to survive when you can roll your eyes, laugh, and text your best mom friend: “Guess who just tried to flush a Hot Wheels car down the toilet?” If you need a good laugh, check out my book Mom Interrupted. Guaranteed to make mom’s pee their pants.
Clara Harper’s Take
Mom burnout isn’t a new trend — it’s just finally being named out loud. The best way to survive it is to stop pretending moms can do everything, all the time, with a smile. You’re not a machine. You’re a human raising humans.
The Bottom Line
Mom burnout is real, but it doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re carrying too much. The cure isn’t “try harder” — it’s rest, boundaries, and finding ways to laugh at the chaos.
Want More?
That’s exactly why I created my humor-filled workbook series, Mom Interrupted and the upcoming sleep training book called Mom Awakened — pages of sarcastic therapy prompts, ridiculous survival exercises, and wine-pairing rewards designed to help you laugh instead of cry.
And for the kids? The My Inner Monster books teach them to name and manage their big feelings — so maybe they’ll give you fewer reasons to burn out.
