Using Children’s Books to Foster Social-Emotional Learning: Why It Matters

By Clara Harper

As a children’s book author, I’ve always been fascinated by the emotional depth that stories can offer kids, even when they seem simple on the surface. More and more, educators and parents are recognizing the importance of social-emotional learning (SEL)—and books are one of the best tools we have to nurture these skills in children.

Why Social-Emotional Learning?

Social-emotional learning helps kids understand their own emotions, build empathy, and develop strong relationships. It’s more than just teaching manners or dealing with outbursts; it’s about helping kids navigate the complex web of feelings they experience daily. Books create safe spaces where children can explore difficult emotions like anger, sadness, fear, and joy through relatable characters.

My book, Anger Is My Monster, dives into the concept of anger as a “monster” that feels uncontrollable until the main character learns how to manage it. It’s not just about avoiding tantrums; it’s about acknowledging that feelings like anger are okay, and learning how to express them in a healthy way.

Why Children’s Books Are Perfect for SEL

Books naturally invite reflection. When a child sees a character going through something they’ve experienced—whether it’s anger, grief, or fear—they feel validated. They can think, “I’m not the only one who feels this way.” This alone can help reduce anxiety in kids, but even more importantly, it opens up conversations between adults and children about these big feelings.

Studies show that reading is an effective way to foster empathy. By stepping into a character’s shoes, children begin to understand emotions beyond their own experience. SEL programs that incorporate literature are on the rise because of this connection. As kids read about characters who face challenges and ultimately grow from them, they learn those same lessons themselves.

The Power of Stories to Build Resilience

Resilience is a key part of SEL, and books are amazing for helping kids understand how to bounce back from setbacks. Take, for instance, The Secret Life of Rose, a story that explores the experience of autism through a deeply personal lens. It shows kids that everyone faces struggles, but we all have the strength to overcome them with the right support. That message is universal, and books provide it in a way that resonates with readers of all ages.

In Anger Is My Monster, the young protagonist learns that while she can’t make her anger disappear, she can control how she responds to it. This simple yet powerful lesson teaches kids resilience. It’s okay to feel angry, sad, or frustrated—what matters is how you move forward from those feelings.

How Educators and Parents Can Use Books for SEL

Teachers and parents are always looking for new ways to incorporate SEL into the classroom or home. Books make it easy! They’re accessible, engaging, and allow children to learn in a fun, non-threatening way. Whether it’s reading aloud as a group or giving a child time to process a story on their own, the impact is undeniable.

To help foster SEL in your classroom or at home, start with stories that touch on specific emotional challenges. For example, my Anger Is My Monster is great for teaching kids about anger management. Other fantastic reads include titles that tackle themes of kindness, friendship, and overcoming fear. Don’t forget to ask questions like, “How do you think the character felt?” or “What would you do in that situation?” These discussions are key to SEL.
