How AI Writing Tools Are Revolutionizing the Careers of Authors: My Personal Journey with Creative Tech

As a children’s book author, I’ve always believed in the magic of storytelling. Watching young readers light up when they connect with a story is the heart of why I write. I have two sons and they are my always the reason I do what I do and they are the perfect focus group for pitching new ideas.

What many readers don’t see is the long, sometimes challenging process that goes into writing a book. Like many writers, I’ve dealt with writer’s block, tight deadlines, and the endless need to revise drafts. But in recent years, I’ve found a new companion in my writing journey—AI tools. Now hear me out, don’t leave just yet! I know this topic is controversial, but I am here to tell you that the tools are just tools virtual assistants for lack of a better term, here to help you be successful when your human mind is in a slump. Any intelligent person can tell when a writer uses an AI tool to completely write a children’s book. That is NOT what I am here to promote or even encourage. I want quality stories available on the market for my children and that is not accomplished by writers who’s goal is to mass-produce 100% AI generated garbage. But stay with me for a few minutes and continue reading, because I am here to endorse tools that can only enhance your creativity and add value to the hours and hours of work you authors are putting in to create your masterpieces.

When I first heard about AI writing assistants, I was skeptical. I wondered, “How could a machine possibly help me, someone who pours my heart into crafting tales for children?” But curiosity got the better of me, and I decided to explore these tools. That’s when I discovered how invaluable AI can be, not just for tech-driven writers, but even for creative people like me.

Overcoming Writer’s Block with AI

One of the biggest challenges I face is writer’s block—those moments when my creative well seems to dry up. Enter AI tools like ChatGPT and Sudowrite. These programs don’t replace my creativity, but they offer a push in the right direction when I’m stuck. Whether it’s suggesting a new way to start a chapter or offering fun, whimsical dialogue ideas for a character, these tools spark fresh ideas that get me back on track.

For instance, I was struggling with an ending for my novel, (release date to come later!), and after feeding some of the existing plot into an AI, it suggested a few creative directions. One of them turned out to be the perfect match for my story. It felt like I had a brainstorming partner right at my fingertips!

Editing and Polishing with AI

I’ve also found AI incredibly helpful for editing. I still rely on human editors (there’s no replacing that personal touch!), but tools like Grammarly and ProWritingAid help catch small errors that I might overlook during the first drafts. They also highlight overused words or awkward phrasing, allowing me to clean up my prose before sending it off for a full edit.

Hemingway Editor, in particular, has become my go-to for ensuring my language is clear and appropriate for my young audience. It highlights complex sentences or passive voice, which can be hard for children to understand. With these suggestions, I can simplify my text without losing the meaning or magic behind it.

AI for Research and Marketing

Another surprising area where AI has made a difference is in the marketing and research side of my career. As an author who self-publishes from time to time, I have to wear many hats. Tools like Jasper and SEO Surfer help me craft blog posts and social media content that resonate with my readers. These tools optimize my content for keywords and SEO, making sure that my work gets discovered by the right audience.

AI tools also help me understand market trends by analyzing what’s currently popular in children’s literature. From character types to themes, AI-driven data analysis provides insights I wouldn’t have considered on my own. See my other article on digital marketing.

Balancing Creativity with AI

I won’t pretend that AI does all the heavy lifting. As a storyteller, I still need to ensure my stories come from the heart and that my voice shines through. What AI does is enhance my process. It’s like having an assistant who can suggest ideas, point out typos, and help get my books in front of the right readers. Ultimately, the stories remain mine, but AI makes the journey to completing them smoother.

Using AI as a tool doesn’t mean sacrificing creativity; in fact, it’s the opposite. I’ve been able to write faster, smarter, and more creatively because AI allows me to focus on what truly matters—the magic of storytelling.

AI has been a game-changer for me, and I encourage other authors to give it a try. You don’t have to sacrifice creativity in order to used the free tools at your disposal. After all, anything that helps bring more stories into the world can only be a good thing, right?
