Surviving Baby Sleep Regressions Without Losing Your Sanity

Tired Mama?

If you’ve ever Googled “why won’t my baby sleep” at 3 a.m. while clutching a cold cup of coffee and silently cursing every parent on Instagram who claims their six-week-old is “such a good sleeper,” then congratulations—you’re officially in the trenches of a baby sleep regression.

And no, it’s not your fault. You didn’t “mess up the routine” or forget the magic swaddle fold. Sleep regressions happen because your baby’s brain is growing faster than PTA Susan’s Facebook gossip chain, and sometimes that growth equals chaos at bedtime.

What Is a Sleep Regression?

In mom-speak: it’s when your baby suddenly decides sleep is optional. They’ll nap for five minutes, scream for forty, and then wake up at 2 a.m. demanding snacks, cuddles, and possibly Netflix.

In science-speak: it’s a temporary disruption in sleep patterns linked to big developmental milestones like rolling over, crawling, teething, or plotting new ways to keep you from ever sitting down again.

When Do Sleep Regressions Happen?

Classic ages are:

  • 4 months (a doozy—welcome to the big leagues)
  • 8–10 months (because crawling at 2 a.m. is apparently fun)
  • 12 months (the “I can stand in my crib now, and I will, forever” stage)
  • 18 months (hello separation anxiety and toddler drama)
  • 2 years (the age of “no” hits bedtime too)

But here’s the secret most parents don’t realize:
👉 A sleep trained baby has far fewer regressions.

Why? Because sleep training gives your baby the ability to self-soothe and return to sleep on their own. So instead of “mystery wake-ups” every few weeks, the only bumps you’ll usually see are tied to obvious causes—like teething or illness. Once that passes, your baby goes right back to sleeping like a champ.

No endless guessing, no “maybe it’s a leap,” no buying every magic sleep gadget on the internet. Just predictable sleep you can actually count on.

How Do You Survive a Sleep Regression?

If your baby isn’t sleep trained yet, don’t panic. You can still get through regressions without completely unraveling:

  1. Stick to your anchor times. Even if nights are messy, keep wake-ups and bedtimes consistent. Structure is your secret weapon.
  2. Don’t add fifty new props. If you start rocking, bouncing, or humming Moana every night, your baby will expect that forever.
  3. Take care of yourself. Trade shifts with your partner, nap when you can, and yes, pour that survival glass of wine when bedtime finally sticks.

Why Sleep Training Changes the Game

The beauty of sleep training is that you don’t live in constant fear of the next regression. Sure, teething might throw a wrench in things, but you’ll know why it’s happening, and you’ll know your baby will get right back on track. That predictability is what gives moms their sanity back.

And that, my friends, is why I wrote Mom Awakened: The Real Mom’s Guide to Sleep Training Without Losing Your Mind.
