Ultimate Guide to Marketing Your First Children’s Book for Aspiring Authors

Hello, fellow storytellers and dreamers! I’m Clara Harper, author of Anger is My Monster, and I wanted to share some tips on marketing your first children’s book. This journey has been such an exciting learning curve for me, and I hope my experience can help you if you’re about to release your own story into the world. Whether you’re an aspiring author or just curious about the process, I’m here to give you the scoop on what worked for me and what could help you too.

1. Build Your Online Presence Early

Before Anger is My Monster was even finished, I started building an online presence. Having a website (like mine, www.claraharperbooks.com) was essential for giving updates, sharing behind-the-scenes looks at the writing process, and letting readers get to know me. It was a place to collect emails, and I highly recommend starting an email list even before your book is published.

Social media also played a huge part in generating buzz. I posted regularly on Instagram and Facebook, sharing snippets of the book, artwork (sneak peeks of the illustrations are always a hit!), and updates on my progress. By the time the book was released, I had a group of engaged followers who were excited to see the finished product.

2. Use Pre-orders to Your Advantage

When Anger is My Monster became available for pre-order, it was a game-changer. Pre-orders can create a sense of urgency and help build momentum for launch day. I kept reminding my followers on social media about the pre-order link, and I made sure to highlight the benefits of ordering early (like a limited edition bookmark I sent out to the first 50 orders).

3. Collaborate with Other Authors and Bloggers

Networking with other authors and bloggers in the children’s literature space was crucial. We did blog swaps, shared each other’s work, and built a community around supporting one another. I also reached out to mommy bloggers and early childhood educators to review my book, which helped increase visibility.

4. Offer Free Content

Freebies always get people excited! I created free downloadable coloring pages based on the illustrations from Anger is My Monster. These were super popular with parents and teachers, and they acted as a gentle nudge to get people interested in the book. Don’t be afraid to offer something extra in exchange for an email address or a social share!

5. Host Virtual Events

In-person book signings are wonderful, but virtual events can bring your book to a global audience. I hosted a virtual book launch on Facebook, where I read Anger is My Monster live, answered questions, and did a giveaway. I also partnered with some local libraries for virtual storytime sessions, which not only promoted my book but also connected with readers across different communities.

6. Partner with Schools and Libraries

Getting Anger is My Monster into local schools and libraries was a priority for me. I reached out to educators, offering to send them a free copy in exchange for feedback or hosting a reading session. If you can, offer to do a classroom visit (virtual or in-person) to read your book and talk to the kids about your story.

7. Consistent Follow-up

Finally, don’t forget that marketing a book doesn’t stop on launch day. I made sure to keep promoting Anger is My Monster weeks and even months after its release. Sharing positive reviews, featuring it in newsletters, and continuing to engage with my audience kept the momentum going.

Writing and marketing your first children’s book can be overwhelming, but with some planning, creativity, and persistence, you can make it a success!
